A containment structure encasing the Chernobyl reactor core in Ukraine has lost its main safety function of blocking radiation, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This failure follows a drone attack earlier this year that blew a hole in the structure.

Structural Compromise from Aerial Attack Compromises Containment System

A drone strike in the second month of the year severely damaged the so-called “new safe confinement” structure. This massive shield, constructed for €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was designed to contain radiation over the long term. A recent IAEA inspection last week found that the drone impact had degraded the structural integrity of the steel arch.

The [protective structure] had lost its primary safety functions, including the confinement capability, stated IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. He added that inspectors found no permanent damage to its load-bearing structures or monitoring systems.

The original 1986 disaster at Chornobyl – which occurred when Ukraine was part of the USSR – released radiation across Europe. During a frantic containment effort, Soviet authorities built a concrete “sarcophagus” over the ruined reactor, though it possessed only a three-decade design life. The New Safe Confinement was erected to enable the eventual decommissioning of the original structure, the destroyed reactor hall, and the molten fuel within.

While some repair work has been done, agency officials emphasized that comprehensive restoration is essential. This is required to prevent further degradation and to guarantee safety for the coming decades. Officials in Ukraine had stated that a unmanned aircraft carrying a high-explosive warhead hit the facility, igniting a blaze and compromising the protective cladding.
