Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An recent initialism emerged several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a minor who has lost their whole family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
