No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
