Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
