Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
