The Battle Royale's Niche Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers has an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Fans of the battle royale's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to discover that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th.

Introducing Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability provides gamers a surge of forward momentum when scaling obstacles. According to lead battle royale designer the design lead, this technique was previously existed of Apex Legends for some time, often called as "ledge boosting." However it's challenging for the average player, and is mainly used by competitive players in competitive play or tournaments. In this update, the team is making it easier for everyone to execute these tricky speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in the game for a while, but the movement requires skill to perform and a player would never know it's possible without external guides," Canavese explains. "Now including a Mantle Boost indicator so users can clearly identify when and how to trigger the fast-paced movement ability, making accessible the feature and introducing new ways to compete for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a once niche technique accessible to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says developers wants players to feel powerful — including ones who are inexperienced.

"Our community performs other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we looked around at our competition, observed what the community execute, and we said, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" Mohan clarifies. "Since currently, certain techniques are kind of janky to use — it requires to remap your keybinds and execute within one-frame windows. So we said, 'What if we make a polished version?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is primarily the name of the game in this season, with characters the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant receiving enhancements to maintain them mobile. Recovery time on her tactical ability is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will boost players into the air faster than it used to. Her defensive walls feature overhead protection and the ability to provide movement bonuses to allies in range. However it's aerial Valkyrie receiving significant improvements this season, with various adjustments implemented to make her stronger, faster, and deadlier.

"I think many agree that her moment is here," says character developer Ian Holstead. "Certainly that she's been dominant in the past, but with the introduction of other characters, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in today's the game. It was a really great opportunity for the team to revisit multiple elements [of her kit] and sort of restore her to her glory days."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To reclaim Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, Holstead notes the team evaluated all her skills and implemented some powerful modifications. Her jetpack have been upgraded, increasing her speed while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, allowing her to spend more time aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to tag enemies who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive skill — which lifts teammates skyward for redeployment or escape — now takes much less time to fire up. She's also getting recently added Legend Upgrades that players can choose to conserve resources, widen the area of her rockets, or further speed up her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead says.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's only floating arena, Olympus, is getting a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that opens up bottlenecks and renders securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. Respawn says Apex Legends this update is all about providing gamers the tools required to keep up with the competition.

"Really, we were looking at the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," explains lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
