This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
